Finishing in a 1v1 Situation

A Session in Learning How to use a Move to Beat a Defender to Create a Shot

Purpose:

The purpose of this session is to give the players the opportunity to practice taking defenders on in a one versus one situation to create a shot. By the time they finish this session they should understand when to make a move, how to set a defender up and how to get into space to create a shot. A team that has players that can create off the dribble by beating a defender is extremely dangerous at any time as they are a continual threat to break thru the defense at any time. Train the players in the mechanics of beating a defender and when to attack and they will be a dangerous team.

Equipment:

Cones, pinnies, balls.

Progression:

Fundamental:
The warm up is fairly basic with players passing and moving and working on moves. Keepers can be in frame or doing a separate warm up. Occasionally have the players receive the ball, make a move and take a shot.

Match Related:
The session progresses to a more structured format as the players receive a ball, make a move going at the goal and then take a shot. This progresses into a one versus one game with a player passing the ball in, then becoming the defender.

Match Condition:
The session ends with three versus three and keepers for optimal touches. The players are looking to create the one versus one match up, then to engage the defender and beat him to create a shot. It should be fast paced with lots of shot on frame.

Coaching Points:

  • Emphasize the technical aspects of finishing (head down, ankle locked, head over knee over toe, follow through, weigh transfer to shooting leg and so forth.
  • Can you make a move to beat a defender?
  • Receive and push the ball forward to space then make a move
  • Attack the defender quickly, make him engage
  • Shoot within one to two touches after the move, the defender will be coming.
  • Aim for placement across the goal to side net.
  • Set the defender up: take him where you don’t want to go, make a move to end up in the place you actually want to finish from
  • Create by playing quickly
  • Find the one versus one opportunity and exploit it
  • Adjust body after move for a proper shot
  • Can you combine with other players to create?
  • Make the move about three yards from the defender, too soon and he wont fall for it, too late and there will be a tackle.
