Short Passing

Teaching the Technique of Short Quick Passes under Twenty Yards

Purpose:

This session is designed to teach the technical skill needed to complete short quick accurate passing. Teams that can make short passes are able to possess and teams that possess are the teams that win. Before a team can be taught possession they must be able to make the short pass with great accuracy. The emphasis in this session should be on the technical aspects of the short pass.

Equipment:

Cones, pinnies, balls.

Progression:

Fundamental:
Box passing is designed for the players to get a lot of quick touches while making short passes. As the players are working look to comment on technique to correct the flaws in their technical game.

Match Related:
In 3v3v3 the game is essentially 6v3 where the team that loses the ball transitions over to defense. The game is designed in a fairly tight space to add the pressure of opponents trying to tackle and win while at the same time giving numbers up to keep the pressure from being too high. The player should incorporate the technique learned in the first part into this small sided game.

Match Condition:

In playing 6v6 with grids the idea is to encourage short passing to open up long passing. Again focus on how the player is making the pass and technique involved. Also look to comment a bit on shape to encourage the short and long pass.

Coaching Points:

  • Plant the planter foot to the side and parallel with the ball
  • Get your weight over the ball
  • Get a good backswing
  • Lock the ankle
  • Point the toe down
  • Align the knee head and toe just in front as you strike the ball.
  • Follow thru lifting the head.
