Tactical “The movement of the game: organized chaos
Tactics in soccer is the coordinated movement of the players and the ball; it is the principles of play behind the game. Soccer is a game of continuous motion without timeouts or stoppages of play. Once the opening kickoff takes place, the players must understand how to move and what to do with minimal instructions from a coach. Teaching this movement is the training of tactics
Tactics has three distinct phases; attacking, defending and transition.
- Basic attacking: An introduction for players to the roles of the first, second and third attackers, establishing basic shape, possession and combination play.
- Advanced Attacking: Advanced attacking progresses from the basics into attacking in the thirds of play; incorporating a flat back defensive system into attacking, and direct versus indirect attacking.
- Basic Defending: An introduction to the roles of the first, second and third defenders, and basic defensive set pieces
- Advanced Defending: Training players to defend in blocks, training a flat back system and learning how to defend in the thirds of play are covered in this section.
